Do I really need to learn all this theory

Also keep in mind that you don’t have to learn ALL of the theory, maybe you just learn some scales and some chords and maybe how they relate to each other. It doesn’t have to be either-or and if you don’t want to learn any theory at all, then don’t. Certainly when it comes to metal, plenty of guitarists create riffs and songs based on what sounds good and what feels good to play. However, understand that this limitation in knowledge comes with a specific type of limitation in your playing and compositions. If those limitations don’t stop you enjoying your craft and pursuing your goal, then don’t worry about it… and understand that at a certain point, absorbing at least SOME theory will happen naturally and will in fact be a pleasant experience, far removed from the blackboard and pencils of your highschool music class (or whatever they have in classrooms these days I dunno I haven’t been in school for 20 years). That stuff is taught in the most boring way possible.
