As I was doing research for the book review services video I was double-checking the costs and timelines for the reputable review services. I’ve always known that Kirkus was so far out of my price range it wasn’t funny. So I had always assumed Publisher’s Weekly would be equally expensive or just a closed door to indies. I mean every traditional and indie publisher plus all of us self-publishers want to get their book a rave review from PW. So competition is high, I just assumed they would have had a cut off or only authors with agents who know someone on the editorial staff get their books reviewed by PW. Which I’m sure plays some role in it, but when I did my research I saw that… You can get a review from Publisher’s Weekly for free. No, that can’t be right. Nope, that’s the cost. Say what!? Have I been missing out this whole time? Maybe, maybe not. I’m not sure when this policy came about, but I’m glad I found this now. For traditional authors, there is a Galley Tracker system that Publisher’s Weekly uses. For us self-published authors we can submit via BookLife. The account is free to set-up and you can just pay for the editorial review from BookLife. Or you can submit to Publisher’s Weekly. For Free. Now here’s the catch. It’s kind of likely playing the lottery. How many potential books can this team review? But if you don’t submit then you have 0 chance. So, why not? Now, the submission guidelines do say that they prefer to have a 3-4 month lead time ahead of publication. So that backlog you’ve been growing for years, may not be the best idea to submit. (As you can see in my screencap here, I’ve added my books to the BookLife profile. I could submit them, but they are all published past tense, no new ones on the horizon just now.] But I know I am adding this to my process for my next release. 3-4 months is a long lead time for me, I like a 6 weeks pre-release phase. But it could be worthwhile to extend it. Okay, so have you submitted your books via BookLife to be reviewed by PW? Did they pick your book? OMG what did the review say? Did it help your sales? Did you pay BookLife to do a review? How did that go?
