@PARlS238 months ago Everest is growing by 0.2” or 4mm per year. I doubt anyone would notice it getting harder to climb since over a 50 year period it would only have grown by 20cm or 8” 22

@ChazFoulstone8 months ago One of the freakiest things I remember hearing is that if you are climbing with other people and one of them succumbs to the elements/cold/oxygen and die, you are ENCOURAGED to LEAVE THEM, as stopping to revive or return their body wousl exhaust you so much you'd likely die shortly after too ... 15

@BKbucknut938 months ago It’s not impossible to breath. You can breathe, it’s just that your body can’t replace the oxygen expended at a very fractional rate. Within a few days your body would stop functioning and shut down. 2

@mikeandangesmith61568 months ago One of a disturbing story that I heard is apparently there were a group of friends climbing and 2 friend decided not to wait and climbed earlier. They were hours ahead… The friends were climbing up and see both of those 2 friends un alive and rolling down the mountain..
another story was that these people were climbing and saw a woman screaming for help but they left her. Over 1-2 years they saved money up and did a burial for her. How sad that they left her and they could’ve saved a life. So sad that the sherpas weren’t there then too :(

@maryobrien87417 months ago As deadly as Everest is, there are 5 mountains that have a higher death rate. Four of the other 5 deadliest mountain also have reduced oxygen, fatal weather and death zones. One reason Everest death rate is so high is because of the number of people who attempt to climb the mountain each year. The skill level of many who try the climb is poor at best. Technically, the mountain is not as hard to climb as K2, Nanga Parbat, Annaparna, and Kangachenjunga. ...
  • @
@janinekaretai43068 months ago Nightmare. Sir Edmund Hilary from New Zealand climbed this mountain with the assistance of a Sherpa, with no oxygen.

  • @
@davidhouse19858 months ago I’d rather not be a landmark on Mt. Everest. ☠️ 1
  • @
@constantinscheuer68608 months ago Couple of wrong facts: it is not harder to climb due to tectonic activities. More perhaps because of more people wanting to climb it and this leads to longer waiting times.
Above 26kft (8km) is called the death zone, yes, but it is not impossible to breath there. O2 concentration is a third of what it would be at sea level. It is called death-zone because the body is basically dying and can not sustain this environment over longer periods, even when resting.

@scottcaine45147 months ago I wouldn't be arguing its getting more challenging to climb because its growing each year when it's only by 4mm per year.

@KKP75578 months ago I truly don't see why people do this. I'm doing any activity where I have to walk by the dead bodies of those who tried and failed. Maybe the whole climbing Mt. Everest thing should end and the mountain left alone as sacred ground for the fallen. ...

@lr1a7048 months ago You can breath in the death zone. The oxygen content is too low to sustain a human for a prolonged period. Climber Alan Arnette says on his blog as of 2022 that only 216 people have summited and returned without the use of supplemental oxygen. Although the number is low it proves without a doubt that it is not "impossible to breath in the death zone". You will die without supplemental oxygen if you spend too much time at that altitude. Proper conditioning and acclimatization can mitigate the effects and make summiting possible as proven in 1978 by Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler. ... 1

@CH67guy18 months ago The upward growth of Everest is negligible. Hardly measurable from year to year. Maybe measure it every 100 years.
The Royal Geographical Society estimates that Mount Everest is growing at a rate of 4 mm a year.

  • @
@Andreas-yz5cf7 months ago Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler among others have reached the summit without oxygen. So it's not true, that one will die without it in the death zone. But, for the most who would try, it surely would lead to death.
  • @
@sophroniel7 months ago It's called "third man syndrome". People delirious from cold and high altitude feel another person in their party, supporting them and leading them on

@reehanataj22088 months ago I used to be obsessed with Everest and K2 and other mountains. I will watch films, documentaries, read books because I was fascinated by it. Some climbers will say it's about conquering nature, but I think it's a more spiritual journey as well as physical. I feel really sad when I hear about Climbers and Sherpas dying and ask myself why do they do it? Other people have climbed it. It's nothing new, they're putting their own lives in danger for what? I heard about the Pakistani Sherpa at K2, and the Norwegian climbers climbed over him as he lay dying! What did thry achieve apaet from being berated by people on the internet? Was it worth his death? At the very mimimum, retrieve their bodies at a later date. May they all rest in peace. Inna lillahi wal raj'iun. ...
