The women’s 100 meter showdown is among the first 15 finals slated for this Saturday’s first day of competition at the 2023 Prefontaine Classic. Sha’Carri Richardson has been in exciting form this season, winning all three of her 100meter duels against Jackson. Richardson season’s best and personal best both stand at an impressive 10.65 seconds, a time she shares with Jackson. Back-to-back Olympic 100meter and 200meter sprint double champion Elaine Thompson-Herah, holder of the Hayward Field stadium record at 10.54 seconds, is not to be discounted. The Jamaican has visibly shaken off her early season problems and is returning to her best form of the year. After failing to make the Jamaican individual sprint team at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest last month, Thompson-Herah is certainly heading to her best form again and is coming off a season-best performance of 10.84 seconds. She is considered by many to be a serious challenge to the frontrunners. Meanwhile, Marie-Josée Ta Lou of the Ivory Coast, a world finalist, has also been in excellent form this season, clocking a season-best of 10.75 seconds. She remains a contender for the top podium spot as well. The field is rounded out by athletes who have all clocked personal bests under 11 seconds. Great Britain’s Imani Lansiquot, although having the slowest personal best in the lineup at 10.99 seconds, recently finished second to Thompson-Herah in Bellinzona on September 4 and is certainly buzzing about improving that time for the Final. As the Wanda Diamond League prepares to wrap up its 2023 season at the iconic Hayward Field this weekend, all eyes are on the women’s 100meter race. With a star-studded lineup featuring world champions and Olympic gold medalists, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Diamond trophies and a $30,000 top prize await the winners in the 32 finals and Sha’Carri Richardson, Shericka Jackson, and Elaine Thompson-Herah are certainly eyeing the top prize. Today, at the first day of Diamond League Final, Shericka Jackson won the latest installment of her ongoing battle with Sha’Carri Richardson in the 100meter. The Jamaican finished powerfully to overhaul long-time leader Marie-Josee Ta Lou to claim the Diamond Trophy at the Prefontaine Classic in 10.70 seconds. Ta Lou was second in 10.75 with two-time Olympic 100meter champion Elaine Thompson-Herah clocking a season's best 10.79 in third place, just ahead of world champion Richardson. This was Jackson's first win over Richardson in four 100meter races this season. Richardson who owns the world's season best of 10.65 was beaten over for just the second time this year, finishing fourth in 10.80. Richardson won't race the 200meter, but Jackson will be back in action at Hayward Field on Sunday and attempt to complete a Diamond double. The 29-year-old will take another crack at the 200meter world record of 21.34 set by Florence Griffith-Joyner in 1988. Jackson retained the 200meter world title last month with the second-fastest time in history, a stunning 21.41 seconds that destroyed a top-class field. She got out to a solid start and but the time she came out of her drive phase and worked into top-end speed, she was able to easily pull in front and hold off all challengers. “I just started sprinting in 2021 and to be among these great female sprinters is a good feeling," Jackson said. "It always help to push you.” World champion Sha'Carri Richardson of the U.S. did not get a good start, which doomed her from being able to contend for the win. At the end of a long season, she finished fourth in 10.80, just ahead of compatriot Tee Tee Terry, who was fifth in 10.83. What matters is being whole with myself as an athlete, being a great competitor, executing what it is that I know I can after having an amazing season," Richardson said. "I am not mad at all about the time that I did today. “Today was amazing, a great end to the season. It just gives me stuff to work on, prepare for Olympics next year. Expect me to continue to be “I’m not back. I’m better.” Source: Diamond League NBC Sports Maximalism by Punch Deck | https://soundcloud.com/punch-deck Music promoted by https://www.chosic.com/free-music/all/ Creative Commons CC BY 3.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ *Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research.
